The Department of Biology of San Francisco State University is asking for participants in "The Great Sunflower Project". They are collecting data on bee populations in urban environments with the hope to develop strategies to support bees. Participants are asked to grow a Lemon Queen Sunflower and record observations of bee visits. |
The medicinal benefits of sunflowers have been known for thousands of years! Native Americans cultivated sunflowers since 2300 BC. Sunflower oil is enriched with Vitamin E. Sunflower seeds have both diuretic and expectorant properties, and kernels are rich sources of phytosterols, a natural chemical which has been shown to reduce cholesterol. Calcium, thiamine, vitamin B-6 and folic acid are nutrients which are abundant in sunflower seeds. Herbal treatments using sunflowers include: bronchial infections and whooping cough, snake bites and sunstroke.
